Abnormalities of Heart Rhythm

THE ARRHYTHMIA CENTER

Dr. Erik  Altman  will be joining Island Cardiac Specialists in January 2017 !

Every single heartbeat starts with an electrical signal. Every second, of every minute, of every day, carefully regulated electrical impulses travel through our heart muscle via a specialized conduction system to coordinate the synchronized beating of our hearts. The system works magnificently most of the time, speeding up our heart when we need extra energy, slowing it down when we are at rest.

On ocassion, however, something goes wrong. For unclear reasons, our heartbeat may start to skip or become irregular. Our hearts may speed up uncontrollably or suddenly slow and even stop.

Some of these abnormalities of heart rhythm are benign. Often, however, these abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias, can have serious and significant consequences. The good news is that proper treatment can control or permanently cure the vast majority of these arrhythmias.

At The Arrhythmia Center at Island Cardiac Specialists, we focus on the care of patients with disorders of their heart rhythm. While a general cardiologist might focus on any number of problems (like high blood presure, or high cholesterol, or leaky heart valves, or blocked arteries) as cardiac electrophysiologists, we spend our time and energy primarily focused on the heart's electrical system. Combining medical, minimally invasive, and surgical techniques, we work collaboratively with our patients and their physicians to provide unique insight and specialized care.
